Verbal interpretation services falls into two main categories - consecutive and simultaneous interpreting (SI). Conference interpreting is a specialized service that may encompass both strategies.
Health Care Interpreting is a specialized arena in which PALS for Health has become well known. Without the ability to communicate effectively or understand medical information, Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals and families face tremendous barriers in accessing health care services. In compliance with federal laws and regulations regarding healthcare many clinics and hospitals have begun to incorporate language services into their daily operations.
While PALS for Health specializes in health related matters our trained interpreters are often requested for almost any type of arena or topic – including but not limited to nonprofit services, education, small business and more. We look forward to serving you for all of your interpretation needs.
PALS for Health is a contractor under the LA County Department of Public Health/Division of HIV and STD Programs to provide no-cost/subsidized medical interpretation services for low-income HIV+ and AIDS diagnosed monolingual patients being served within the DHSP network. Verbal interpretation services falls into two main categories - consecutive and simultaneous interpreting (SI). Conference interpreting is a specialized service that may encompass both strategies.
- Consecutive interpreting is most common in medical interpreting. It involves a face to face interaction with an interpreter interpreting what the speaker says after a short delay. This mode of interpreting is generally the preferred methodology as it causes the least confusion especially in medical, legal and other sensitive settings. Consecutive interpreting is also considered the most accurate method when compared with telephone or other methods (e.g. video medical interpretation) of medical interpreting.
- Simultaneous interpretation (SI) is one of the most demanding and highly skilled professions. It requires the interpreter to speak contemporaneously with the speaker whose statements are being heard. Consequently, very few individuals reach the level of professional conference interpreter. Simultaneous interpretation is utilized in meetings, conferences, training seminars, and medical emergencies where the prime concern is "effective and immediate" communication between individuals who don’t speak the same language. PALS for Health is one of the few language providers with the ability to provide skilled and experienced simultaneous interpretation. Our simultaneous interpreters have extensive experience and professional certification(s).
