Cultural Competence & Language Access Training for Health Care Providers

  • Cultural Competence
  • Language Access

PALS for Health provides cultural competence trainings to health and social service providers serving in areas with a significant or growing number of limited English proficient individuals. Our 3-hour training offers an informative overview of Asian and Pacific Islanders and Latinos (including immigration history and current census trends) and discusses various factors (such as gender, generational differences, health literacy and traditional healing practices) that affect health seeking behaviors. It concludes by suggesting methods of facilitating effective provider/patient communication. The training also offers helpful hints on how to develop the language capacity of your workforce and how to locate and utilize trained health care interpreters. Some past participants include Department of Managed Health Care, Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, AIDS Project Los Angeles, Garden Grove Hospital and Methodist Hospital. If you are interested in scheduling a training, please contact Anita Hong-Ha Le

PALS for  Health offers trainings on language access to health and social service providers serving a limited English proficient (LEP) patient population. The training varies in length and can be tailored to meet the needs of specific institutions. Some components include federal and state language access laws, importance of interpreter training and language proficiency testing, model practices and technical assistance.  If you are interested in scheduling language access training, please contact Anita Hong-Ha Le.
