Interpretation
PALS for Health interpreters are recruited from the communities that we serve. Our pool of interpreters consists of well-respected community leaders from different professional backgrounds that span various disciplines, including the health and social service arena.
All of PALS for Health’s interpreters must undergo an in-house 2.5-hour comprehensive assessment of their written and oral bilingual proficiency, and knowledge of medical terminologies. Those who pass with 80%, or higher, will be screened for interpreter’s readiness and aptitude. Qualified candidates are then enrolled in the PALS for Health 40-hour interpreter training using the Connecting Worlds Training for Health Care Interpreters © curriculum. In addition to the 40-hour in-class instructions, candidates must complete the practicum component where they shadow an experienced interpreter in an actual interpretation session. Candidates will also have the opportunity to provide interpretation services in actual medical appointments under the supervision and observation of a senior interpreter/trainer. The senior interpreter/trainer will provide the candidates with verbal and written feed-back. If the candidate needs additional skills, the senior trainer/interpreter will work with the candidate to come up with a workplan to develop those skills.
As strong supporter of Continuing Education and in ensuring that our interpreters have the most up-to-date information on health care interpreting and health topics, all PALS for Health’s interpreters are required to attend interpreter Continuing Education seminars on a quarterly basis.
